Over the past few years, between teaching in the classroom and working with students individually during tutoring sessions, I’ve become increasingly aware of how few students really understand what is happening when they multiply a number by a multiple of tens. This third grade standard has its roots in K-2 standards, and is fundamental to understanding more complex mathematical problems, including multi-digit multiplication and division.
